What are the top few things you think each area of the government should be doing? After you answer these questions then think about what they actually are doing. How do these items compare to the powers granted to the government by the US Constitution and your State Constitution? Feds: national defense. International relations (like trade treaties). Immigration control (can overlap with national defense). Regulate business to prevent fraud and unfair business practice. Medical safety to prevent quackery. Interstates and railroads. Social engineering. Restraining imminent domain to that which is truly public use. Manage runoff water and pollution that effects more than one state.

They should not be doing: education. Social security (except maybe to mandate that individuals provide for their own).

The federal government should only be involved in stabilizing our monetary system, that which pertains to National Security, the protection of the state lines anonymity, and a function of Supreme Court which resides over local courts.

The things they should not be involved in are abortion, education, Social Security, specific rights of individuals such as gay rights women's rights... all of these listed above should be handled at a state level or local level
