We have a sort of division of worlds in our heads. An 'in here' inside our heads, and an 'out there', what we call the real world. We get a sense of mattering to the extent that we interact with the world outside ourselves. One way we do this is through simple and seemingly pointless things like whistling, tickling, scratching and so on.

Eraser marks on the skin is this sort of activity. By doing a thing we are also done by that thing. It's a pretty harmless way to become real.

Far as I know it's a combination of boredom and stupidity. Same reason kids pick scabs....just to see what happens and how much it hurts.

Perhaps they are wondering if their being is eraser able. Perhaps they are considering the nature of imperfection and perfectibility. Perhaps they feel imperfect.
