It is believed that the earths core is radio active. Heavy radio active elements such as uranium the migrated to the centre due to there density creating a nuclear furnace powering the interior. Pressure of the overlaying material keeps the reaction from getting out of control and destroying the earth and insulates us from the radiation.

h.pfanatic is wrong. If what she states is correct, then why don't all the other rocky planets have hot cores.

After you baked a pie, you can difference the temperature of its surface & interior. The surface is less hotter than its interior. It caused bcoz the surface is faster to escape its calors. You must be know that there is a large surface to escape more calors to the air...

all the pressure of the matter on top heats up the rock in the middle of the earth. the surface of the earth is only heated by the sun, which is not a whole lot of energy, so the amount of heat created by the pressure is much greater than the amount of heat recieved from the sun, seeing as it is 93 million miles away.
