Get as high a GPA as possible (preferrably a 4.0 unweighted GPA).

Get as high a SAT score as possible (preferrably a 2200+).

Talk to your teachers so they'll write you great letters of rec.

Do something special in your extra currics. Doing a bunch of things is almost useless advice. Stanford won't be impressed with seeing a list of crap. They want to see something that makes them go, "wow, this kid is impressive." Anyone can participate in a club or sports team. Not everyone can get a research grant from a big time group, or perform in a famous orchestra, or be published somewhere, be nationally ranked in a sport, etc.

-good grades
-several extracurriculars from different areas (ie athletics, fine arts, community service)
