Because we are younger. America as a nation and a culture is so incredibly younger than Europe - and I think you can see it in the way we live, talk and behave.

Peace!

Hmmm.. thats a great question. I am American and wonder what part of the country you have had contact with. The NY metro area American will be very different from the Midwesterner or the Californian because of history and the cultural make up of these areas. There is also a difference between rural American mindset and an urban/suburban mindset.

It may be that Americans have less "class anxiety" than older, less upwardly mobile societies. Instead of being worried about talking to the company president, an American would be likely to walk up and introduce him- or herself.

An Austrian friend of mine was amazed when I told him that my little niece had met the President when he was campaigning for his second term. While she had his attention, she asked, "Mr. Bush, will you be my show-and-tell at school?" He got a chuckle out of it. But my Austrian friend said that a European would not approach a high-level politician that way, and a child would never dream of it.

So maybe having a less class-oriented society is part of it. :-)

Unlike some of the ignorant answers here (Like jquick), Americans I feel are a mix of all religions, cultures, and people from around the world. We actually like to learn more about others and I feel that Americans in general love to have fun. Even though our government is not making us look too good today, I feel that Americans in general are more accepting of others than most other cultures.

i have found it to be quite the opposite. From things ive heard and experienced in trips..europeans as a whole seem to be more outgoing and positive towards life etc. americans i came in contact with came across very depressed and thus depressing. not to say everyone is like that though :)

Are you kidding me?
Europeans are no different from Americans when it comes to having some fun!!! Try getting sloshed with a couple of Brits, you wouldn't last...
Watch plently of European movies, they aren't far from the truth whe they depict the party life and life of Europeans.

The average american isn't outgoing enough to get up and manually change the channel on their television.

I think Americans are more egotistical because they believe we are the best and it gives them the right to be outgoing because of their freedom of speech.
