I'm 16 and i have a problem using the restroom, like if i have to urinate and someone is in the public restroom with me i wont be able to go until the restroom has no one else in it, this happens even if i really have to go. This has been happening for years even before i have become sexually active... anyone know what my problem is?

It's called shy bladder. Many men have this (and women too). In the case of some men it comes from being traumatized by watching your father or other men urinate in public and comparing your penis size when you were a child. I used to have this condition and when I realized its cause I did some psychological work on myself and am mostly over it except for times at a baseball game with 25 side-by-side urinals all in use. I noticed when there that about ten percent of the guys are waiting to use a closed stall, most of them not out of the need to do #2.

Even though I am mostly over it that is not to say that I prefer to urinate in front of others from an aesthetic standpoint because many men are gross and partially go on the floor, etc.

When I was a child it affected me enough that I couldn't even go into the restroom, but I never got so tense that I couldn't go, in fact I wet my pants a few times rather than possibly be exposed bodily. That was many years ago, but general slackening of your sense of self protection will come, and make it easier... Now I have no problems, so long as I have at least a little wall or something.

I think it comes from an overdeveloped sense of shame, and for me this turned out to be a good thing, but only after I was a few years older than you. When I looked back on my life, it helped me understand who I really wanted to be, and not have just some fantasy life.

My meaning is that you probably have a pervasive quality about you which causes you to be self conscious, and this will ultimately benefit you if you try hard to be honest, and respecting of others, as you want, since you'll be acutely aware of what's helpful and what's not.

Don't worry. I have the exact same problem! I can't stand public restrooms! It's just too close for comfort and quite akward... The only time I can go is if I'm alone or if I have to go VERY bad. I think it's just anxiety and shyness, knowing that a complete stranger is hearing you pee... hahahahaha.. I wouldn't worry about it. Gee, glad I'm not alone in this :)

I notice it takes me a little longer when someone is next to me too. It is an anxiety response, probably stemming from some some readiness issue. You need to relax your muscles to get the urine flowing and this relaxing is what is effected by the proximity of another. It should not stop you completely so you need to work on it.

Believe it or not, some girls have the same issue. It's all in our minds...lol Stage fright is what my friends and I call it. Some of us have it and some don't. :) It has to do with being able to relax enough to actually let the urine flow. So, there's nothing medically wrong...just a little stage fright! :D

Millions of men have this problem...it is only a reaction called shy bladder--not a medical issue----You do say you go when not surrounded by others. So wait for privacy, it is not a big deal. If you couldn't go normally regardless of the lack of privacy, I would say get to a doctor.

my friend used to have the same problem. He would have to pee in the closed stall and flush the toilet as he went so no one could hear. I dont know what its all about but he grew out of it the more comfortable he bacame with his body. Give it some time. Good Luck

Wow.
forgive my ignorance but this is the first time i've heard of this problem.
Yr inability to relax the bladder muscles due to anxiety is probably the cause of it.
Just relax, nobody's gonna do anything to u. Altho i do believe peeing time is a man's most vulnerable time haha

It's called "Bashful Bladder". I also have it.
I have to use the stalls if someone is in there. If I distract myself by thinking of math or some odd thing, I can go & I'm fine.
