Check your sleep, standby, hibernate settings before you buy anything new. You may just have a setting that turns your monitor off after a short time when it appears you're not using the computer (e.g., you're not typing or moving the mouse).
Go into Start > Control Panel > Power Options and check your settings.

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
