To start the outline break down the ideas or concepts you see the metaphors or phrases pointing to. For example

I. Light and Darkness
a. (example of phrase that describes light)
b. (examjple of phrase describes darkness.
c. ("Quotation from story about light or darkness")

II. The Owl
a. referred to as "night spirit"
b. (other examples, quotes).

Get the jist? Your outlines should be really words and phrases not paragraphs.
