Hello Windy,
I felt really really happy in my life, when dedicating myself to a task, or dedicating myself to the wellbeing of one of my fellow men. So to concentrate on this what you want to bring into the world with your own work and to see the results of a long days work, this is so satisfying and gave me always true happiness.
But if I feel I can truly make a difference to another persons life, makes me very happy too. I can forget myself, and my own worries and I feel if I dedicate myself in love to a person, I somehow can reach much higher and to experience the effect this has on somebody else, gives me inner peace and happiness.
My own saddest times in my life were, when I had no idea anymore what I can do of any purpose for something or somebody. Then I always started to get hypochondric, overweight, bored. So one secret of happiness might be to find something which gives you purpose!

Well if I told you, it wouldn't be a secret, would it? But to steer you in a good general direction .... peace can be derived from meditation. The easiest way to meditate is to listen to your breath. Just find a quiet spot, close your eyes, and listen to your breath entering and exiting your nostrils. When you can slow that down to a point where you can no longer hear the air going in and out, you'll be calm, and peaceful. Carrying that tranquility out into the populated world can be a bit trickier, what with road rage and the like, but the more you do it the more it becomes instilled deep within yourself and will just be there. (By the way, the not hearing the breath state has been called, "true poise." Good for the soul.) Happiness is a bit more vague. Sounds like you've already discovered that an endless supply of "things" won't do it. That just makes you want more things. The easiest way to look at this is to ask the question, "What would I like to project into the world?" We all have a choice in this matter, and in general, what you project is what comes back. (Ever see a couple of happy people enter a waiting room? Changes the whole mood.) And, in the words of St. Claire, "If you carry your fun, you own the game."

Windy,
"The teacher shows up, when the student is prepared to get the lesson" ... Just look around and you'll see ... there is a story I read in a book, a certain father that wanted his son to find the "secret" of happyness:
"This certain boy, visited a King who lived in a luxury palace, who was supposed to know the secret of happynes ... But in that exact moment the King was busy and said: I have no time right now to explain u the secret of happyness, all i can suggest at this moment is that u look around my palace and come back in 2 hours, but I want to ask u a favor first, I'll give u this spoon of tea with 2 drops of oil, and while u walk, do not spill this 2 drops of oil. The boy walked all around the palace always looking at the spoon, he didn't want to spill the 2 drops of oil. He came back 2 hours later. And the king asked:
Did u see all the beauty in my palace ?, Did u enjoy my garden full of flowers?. And the boy, embarrased, admited that he didn't enjoy the beauty around the palace because he was just paying attention to the spoon, he didn't want to spill the drops of oil. The King replied: I want u to look again, and this time, enjoy and see. The boy did. This time he noticed how beautiful the palace was. The ceiling, the art, the flowers, the garden, the mountain outside, the sculptures, etc. Back again, the boy explained to the king all wonders he's seen. And then the King asked: But, where are the 2 drops of oil in the spoon I trusted u?. The boy looked at it, and realized that, those 2 drops of oil in the spoon had gone.
The King replied: that is the secret of happyness about ... to look and enjoy all wonders around u, but never forget, spill the objective "...
As a writer, I respect the copyright; this is a Paulo Coelho story ... my favorite one...

The world doesn't need a religion to find happiness and inner peace. Actually, religions KEEP us from finding real happiness and real inner peace.

"True happiness and inner peace" is nothing more than a myth. If it truly did exist, mankind would be able to live forever. However, because every single human being lives with some degree, however slight, of discontent, mankind's day's as living, breathing human beings will always be limited. In short, it's man's inhumanity to man that is inborn that ultimately causes the lack of true happiness and inner peace.
Today's society has foolishly turned to drugs and big drug companies that make anti-depressants for peace, when, in fact, human beings could simply find a bounty of inner peace by simply treating people with dignity, respect, and love.

The kingdom is within. Once you establish that as your priority, everything else falls into place.
Here is something that is deceptively simple, adopt and practice the concept Be Here Now.
Reality, God, Infinity everything that is true can only exist in the present moment. When we are truely present, no hang ups about the past, no fear or anticipation for the future, then we are real.

Being content no matter what the situation is. Thats more or less what your asking. Well you see for this one the answer is in the question, you need to remember you control your emotions and how you feel. there is no such thing as a awkward situation there is only the way u perceive them and handle them. It's only awkward if you feel awkward,if you feel happy then it's a good situation. Do you follow?

If you learn to love yourself and others, as well of the Earth as well-you'll have gained inner peace. A man can be the richest and most intelligent and still have nothing.

I believe inner peace comes from setting to rest all the conflicts of our lives - making amends where needed, dealing with our defects of character, and most of all, adopting and internalizing humility as something we want and embrace.
