Melatonin is effective for me - it's easy to find (at least in the United States.) For occassional use, you can try diphenhydramine (Benadryl.) Benadryl works well, but it isn't the best quality sleep and you develop a tolerance quickly if you use it too often.

Make sure you have no caffeine after noon or 1pm, and you could even try avoiding it all together. For some people, caffeine stays in their system a long time.

I also try laying still and slowly counting - see if you can get to 20 without moving at all.

A small glass of wine a bit before bedtime can help also.

I listen to myself breath when I am trying to fall asleep. It is really boring and puts me to sleep. Or I turn on a really boring TV show such as infomercials and turn the volume way down and that bores me also so i fall asleep.

Drink a warm glass of milk. Long term, make sure that you only use the bed to go to sleep (and other things it is supposed to be used for), don't use it for doing homework, eating, watching tv, or other activities you do while wide awake.
