If the reason we're in Iraq is to protect America... why are we bothering? America is nothing without her people's liberty. NOTHING. Anything worth giving up that easily is not worth fighting to "protect."

Time to leave Iraq. You have just defeated your own argument.

To those who are apparently too obtuse to understand:

YOUR GOVERNMENT DOES NOT HAVE THE RIGHT TO SPY ON YOU. IF YOU SAY THAT YOU DON'T MIND, YOU ARE GIVING UP YOUR LIBERTY, WHETHER OR NOT THE GOVERNMENT CHOOSES TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF YOUR GENEROSITY OR NOT.

I choose NOT to approve of the government spying on us. I choose to stay true to the essential liberty that is of utmost importance to what makes this country great. HOW can we say we're spreading liberty to the world when we give ours up so easily? "Sure, George, spy on me. Do whatever you want. I don't need to be free."

Sorry, not me.

You can explain until you're blue in the face. Any logic seems to bounce off them as if facts do not exist. Everyone builds their own perception of reality i guess. Many people i know are patriotic, yet question any political leadership's motives. It is completely unfathomable to me that a person could give anyone complete control as if they were the heir of King Arthur and that this leader could do no wrong and was a saint or something.

George Bush did not MAKE this country great...many, many people did for 2 centuries...and we are far from perfect...we could provide security and provide for American rights in an aggressive way, but it seems it is easier (more expedient) to produce tools like the Patriot Act and snoop into our private affairs....Att. Gen. Gonzales...in any appearance before Congress...has been the definition of double speak when it comes to how far he has actually gone to undermine the system.

I would agree with Cons. to a certain extent that our daily lives aren't changing (unless you count the several Americans of Arab descent that were held without due process)...but the point is that the government has been given the tools to do anything they want...the only thing stopping them from further intruding is the basic honesty of individuals inside the system...and if someday a leader decides to use this system against us...then we gave it to him on a silver platter.

Are you talking about cameras in the streets? How about tapping public pay phones?
As to being spied on the same laws are in effect as when Clinton was in office. The only difference is that if you call or are called by a known or suspected FOREIGN terrorist your call can be monitored. I have read the law maybe you should. None of it pertains to any ordinary citizen. You must first be identified as a possible AL QUIADA contact before any action can be taken.

You know what if you fit that I hope they do tap your butt.

As to losing freedom and liberty we lost more under Clinton than any other president . Were you bitching then? I was because there was no reason at all and it WAS aimed at the general population.

There are 3 inalienable truths, Liberty is just one. There is also Life and the Pursuit of Happiness. Saddam and his ilk would like to take all 3 away. If a little loss in liberty gives me the right of Life and the pursuit of happiness, I'm willing to give up just a bit. At this point I personally have given up nothing. America is not just about Liberty my friend. If our enemies get their way we will not have to worry about losing a little of it.

By the way all you quoters, Ben Franklin didn't much have to worry about crazy people walking into a movie theater wearing Semtex. His world was infinitely simpler than ours.

This world is getting to be a very dangerous place.
People in many places have no freedoms and in
Africa, they live in cardboard boxes. Many wish
they lived in America and had our freedoms. We
could be like that also if we hadn't had brave men
who fought for us to continue to enjoy freedom.
Security is definitely not a "myth" and we need it
now more than ever before to keep US safe. You
will see for yourself someday, I'm afraid. Security
is keeping us safe everyday right now. Many attacks
have been in the works against us, but our security
has stopped it in it's tracks since 911.

I have never understood the logic in forfeiting liberties to provide liberties for others.

I suppose that makes America the most charitable nation in the world? Kudos guys!

I still got my freedoms that I do within the law... if I do anything to break the law I expect to lose some freedom. Tell me, what freedom have you lost since Bush? If you name them and can still bash on here well guess which one was the myth.

True to the country? After you preach about how they are taking you're freedoms yet here you are spouting off and no one is shutting you down or knocking on you're door and taking you to jail.

First, my liberty has not been eroded. Nor has anyone elses. Please provide me one case where some person has been randomly inprisoned with out timely due process. This person has to be an American Citizen, that has not been charged and convicted of a previous crime, that is not a gang member, and who's current legal issue is not terrorism related.

Second. My point in continuing this war is: If not Iraq and Afghanistan, Where? HERE?

Third. You are going on and on about what COULD happen. Lets leave the conversation to what is likely to happen. For instance, following your logic, you should not drive anymore because you COULD be killed in a car wreck. The US Government COULD, under the patriot act screw the citizens, but is it LIKELY? I think not.

Further, I do not tie the war in Iraq to the patriot act. They are mutually exclusive items. Therefore, the patriot act has nothing to do with killing Haji the Muzzie before he gets us.

And finally, I guess you must be a liberal. One of the people who supports:
laws that prohibit parents from spanking
forces people to wear helmets on motorcycles,
social responsibility before personal responsibilty
raising my taxes to pay for someone else's healthcare,
Unions, as they are the best thing for workers
Economic equality at all costs
Requiring social equality and tolerate and even celebrate diversity over personal responsiblity and individualism.

-and you will tell me about giving up freedom

my correspondence with liberals has convinced me that liberalism has grown dangerously out of touch with the realities of our world.

You support removing parental rights regarding child raising, but you are worried about something that has not yet happened. I guess it matters which rights are important to YOU.

The reason we are in Iraq is to Kill Saddam Hussein, Import democracy to Iraq, and reduce the threat to the whole world that militant islamofacism is causing today.
