Hama Restaurant in Venice.

Sushi Roku is OVERRATED.

Most sushi restaurants are now owned by Korean and Chinese people. The MOST important thing for you to keep an eye on is whether the Sushi Chef is Japanese. If so, chances are that he is ordering the fish, dictating which cuts are used, and properly serving it. If the chef is NOT Japanese, you are just rolling the gastronomic dice. Be careful. For the record, Hama is owned by non-Japanese, but the chefs are from Japan.

The best sushi restaurant in the LA area is Urasawa, but if price is an object at all, you won't want to go there. Dinner runs about $300 a person. Gayot lists it as one of the top 40 restaurants of any kind in the US. It's in Beverly Hills.

More reasonably priced, you might try Sushi Zo. Its in Culver City. http://www.k-zo.com/

Koi in Los Angeles. Very trendy, very nice atmosphere if you're going on a date or hanging out with some close friends. I think it's definitely considered a hot spot in los angeles and hey-the sushi is fantastic.

There is a place I love in Chatsworth, which is in the San Fernando Valley North of LA called Omino Sushi. Everything there is excellent. They are off DeSoto Avenue.
