I was once told that there is no such thing as a dumb question, but hanging around here for a while, I'm coming to believe that that's simply not true.

Many questions are asked here not for the learning potential, but out of a desire to prove how smart they are. Unfortunately, they do just that, and they don't actually get very far up the scale.

My grandfather used to say, and I've heard it elsewhere, "It's better to remain silent and let people think you're ignorant than to open your mouth and remove all doubt:". We could advance that same theory to writing on the Internet.

Well for starters this is a pretty dumb question. The reason behind it is we live in a world full of dumb people.

it's a relatively safe environment to ask a dumb question -- no one really knows you, so if they say "that's dumb" it doesn't matter.

Also, sometimes people are just seeing if anyone is paying any attention to them!

Bullet,
I think that most of them are just beginning to participate in YA.
They think that it is so wonderful to be allowed to ask anything one wants that they ask the first thing that comes on their minds.
As they read and answer more questions, they begin to enter in the spirit of the thing.
At least let us hope that it will happen.

Big Bird said it best, "Asking questions is a good way of finding things out."

Most probably to them their questions are not dumb. I guess, the phrase, " there is no stupid question " applies to them.
