Public Universities vs. Private..?

Which is better?

I'm leaning towards Private because I want to go to a school that will prep be the best for Medical School.

I've been to both, and I preferred the private school. It was smaller, a more close-knit and accepting community, focused more on academics. Also, it had a beautiful campus that they took great pride in - I see that at other private schools, but rarely at public ones.

It depends on the schools you're comparing.

I'm from CA. We have great public and private schools here. Take UC Berkeley for example. Med schools will look highly on kids coming from Berkeley b/c it's so prestigious. BTW kids with equal stats, they'd much rather take a Berkeley kid than someone from a private school like, oh, Univ of San Francisco.

Berkeley's even preferred over a famous private like USC. And the Berkeley kid is paying TONS less than the private school kid. When you've got great public schools in your state, there's very little reason to go to a private unless the private throws a ton of money at you and you have some extra reasons for wanting to go.

Just cuz a school is public doesn't mean it's less selective (UCLA and Berkeley are VERY selective). It doesn't always mean the classes are much bigger either. It really depends on the particular schools you're comparing.

Public: cheaper, bigger, less selective
Private: costlier, smaller, more selective

They work for different educational styles and some public universities (thinking of schools like UCLA) are just as good if not better than many private schools. It depends on what the individual is looking for in a school.

wow...this is hard...public idk..the kids still act as if there in high school and prefer the whole hollister clique scene..its all about materialistic things like the newest cell phone and such...in private the work is definatley harder...but its more close knit....everyone at one point hangs out...a wider range of athletics (more preppy types) and no one is im rich your a ***** becasue most families can simply afford to send there kids there...public..its like.....you have to try hard to look for REAL friends

I think public is so much better: you have more activites, more chances for friends, its cheaper, and a hell of a lot funner.
Private is so gay in my opinion- we dont have any activites, its so expensive, and most of the people here think they are better than u
