it's long so u have a reserve. consider urself lucky in this aspect having a carburatored bike. on the fuel injected bikes, ur only warning ur on fumes is when u get the 'idiot light'. if u run dry on those, u walk....or push. ur choice. i would recommend getting replacements.

If you cut it off you lose your reserve.
When you run out of gas, turn the petcock lever to "reserve", and ride to the gas station.
Or you could walk.
Caked with rust?
I managed to ream mine out with a piece of steel wire.
If you can't get it cleaned out, replace it. Running out of gas with no reserve sucks.

You need to learn how to use the petcock. In the reserve position the gas bypasses the stem.

So your bike will run out of gas, so you can switch it to reserve and get to a gas station if you cut it off when you run out you'll be walking

usually it is long so your run position will run out before your tank is empty. then you switch to reserve and it is open at a lower point.
