If this is a "one off"... meaning that these people aren't coming over and sitting in your house day after day, the first thing I would do is just "air it out"... put a fan to it and leave a window open if it isn't too cold outside.
The second thing I would suggest that would avoid having to thouroghly clean is this... make a "poultice" of baking soda on a thin dish towel. Lightly mist the cushion with plain water, lay a thin dish towel over the offending area, lightly mist the towel with water, pour a layer about 1/4 inch over the towel and then place another towel over it. You can then lay a plastic sheet over that and then a weight... perhaps a piece of plywood (smaller than the towel) and then place a 5 lb object on it. Leave it on for at least a day and then remove.
Another option is an ionizer/ozone generator. They are very effective at eliminating odors. They are sold by a lot of companies including Oreck, SharperImage, Heaven Fresh and I'm sure you can find one on Ebay. Additionally, there are a few places you can rent one for a few days.... if that sounds like something you might be interested in, I would first try at your local janitorial supply company listed in your yellow pages, if they don't have them... always ask for the referral.
And about your carpet... if you are concerned about cleaning and having an overly wet carpet from the cleaning process... you need to clean with a product made by Racine Industries... It's called Host.... its an absorbant product using very low moisture and it has recently been certified "Green". Its the best way to clean your carpet in this particular situation. Don't let anybody tell you different. Check your yellow pages for a cleaner who advertises Host as an option or go to http://www.hostcarpetcleaning.com/ , go to the Contact Us page and ask them for a referral.... you can even do it yourself if you can find a place that rents the equipment. Good luck.

The smell of smoke and pet odors can all be transferred to furniture or car seats. Even onto your clothing if you're standing close enough to someone who smokes a lot.
I'd suggest first opening the windows and turning on some fans to get a bit of fresh air circulating throughout the room. If it is cloth upholstered furniture, Febreze is an absolute godsend and should do the trick. The ones for the home work very well, but I've found that the version they make for automobiles actually works a bit better. You just need to give it a good misting a few times on the affected areas - no need to dampen it. You can use this on upholstered furniture (I even spray it on vinyl and then wipe it off), carpeting, curtains and even towels. It is pretty safe to use in the home around kids and pets. If the smell is so strong or set-in that the Febreze isn't enough to get the odor out of your carpet, you can sprinkle some baking soda on the carpet, let it sit for about 15-20 minutes and then vaccuum it up. Curtains that still hold any lingering odor, if they are machine washable, can be thrown in the washing machine with a mixture of your regular laundry soap and white vinegar.
If you've got leather furniture, you could maybe try opening some boxes of baking soda and setting them on the furniture for a few hours to soak up the odor. There are also volcanic rocks that you can buy in a lot of pet stores that will also do the same thing and are reusable (you set them out in the sun for a few hours to "recharge" their odor absorbency).
Hope these hints will help you some!

Yes it can. Yes, try febreeze. Also, because you are pregnant, and about to give birth to that little one, Please, for you and for the sake of your little one, tell all the people who smoke in your home GO SMOKE OUTSIDE! That should be the new rule in your house. Why? "Cause you don't want the babyto get sick-like asthma in their erly years. Honest. Congrats, and take care.

If the clothes are somewhat saturated with cigarette smoke it could. Shampooing the furniture should get rid of it.
