I think because it was considered the most viable access point for invading N.A. (the United States during the Cold War), should they choose to do so, due to it's proximity to Russia. I would imagine that from a stragegic standpoint that might make some sense. Sure hope you get a more informative answer than this one.

Becouse it was wars,occupants(like every 10 years in Russian history),it was hard time....so Russia was sold for 9.000.000$ this beautiful wild land with north California to USA...in 19 cent
