Its true that if you wash canvas shoes in hot water and dry them on high heat in the dryer they will shrink some and I'm reminded of my Dad who has one foot smaller than the other due to an injury.... he just stuffed the toe of the smaller foot with the tissue that comes in the shoe box. So... if I wanted a shoe to fit that was larger than I wanted, I would stuff it with tissue.

If it is a cloth shoe, washing them on hot and then putting them in your dryer on the highest heat setting should help you a bit.
As for leather, I did hear about one trick, but I've never tried it, so I'm not sure how well it works. I've heard that you can mix some water and rubbing alcohol together, dip a washcloth or a towel in the mixture and then rub it on the insides of your shoes enough to dampen them (just along the sides and tops - no need to wet the insole). Once you've done this, you're supposed to wear them around like that and let them dry on your feet. As they dry, they will supposedly shrink down a bit and start to form to the size and shape of your feet. Again, I'm not sure how well that really works and I don't think I'd suggest doing it more than once or twice to the same pair of shoes because I can't imagine that the rubbing alcohol would be all that good for the leather if you do it too much. And this method would probably only be useful if you were working with a pair of shoes close to your normal size.
For synthetics, I remember that when I was little I had really wide feet, so my mother would always have to buy shoes that were a touch too big for me in order to get the right width. The guy at the shoe store used to put in some foamy strips that had adhesive on one side. He'd put them in at the back of the shoe and along the sides to fill up any extra room, sometimes doubling the strips up, depending on how much room there was. You can try doing something like that if the shoes aren't too huge.

About the safest method is to put a little padding on the inside in the toe of the shoe. Putting the shoes in the washer or dryer could crack the leather and if it did shrink it might not shrink in the right places or the amount you wanted it to.

If they're leather or other hard shoes, you can't wash them to make them shrink. Try insoles and double them up if you have to. They take up room in your shoe and feel great too!

Yes it does help some to shrink them. Just put them in the washer and then dry.

If they are leather, then soak in water for one minute then put a clothes dryer on a shoe rack accessory.
