Despite the enormity and inexplicable nature of the failures of NORAD, the Air National Guard, and the Air Force to protect New York City and Washington D.C., no public investigation has been conducted, and no officials have been reprimanded. To the contrary, General Richard Myers, Acting Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff on September 11th, was confirmed as Chairman just two days later, despite his inability to answer basic questions about the failures. Richard Eberhart, commander of NORAD at the time of the attack, was later chosen to head the newly created Northern Command.
