I wasn't really into cheerleading at first but both my friends were going to try out so I decided to do it as well. Another reason was that I needed a sport anyways.

I started to practice my cartwheels and round-offs and I caught on quickly although I was not consistent. At times I could do a perfect one but sometimes I could not.

At our first try-outs today, we learned a dance routine and it was the most difficult for me out of both my friends. I'm kind of disappointed that I didn't do such a good job.

I would like to do cheerleading very much but try-outs get me all nervous and my doing not so well today as lowered my confidence.

Knowing this, should I continue? The 1st cuts will be on Friday and I make it, it will continue for another week and then final cuts.

If I decide to stay until the end of try-outs, any tips for improvement?

As a past high school and college cheerleader, and current coach, I can only tell you that cheering is not only a sport but a committment.

Practices can be intense and learning choregraphy is something that doesn't come easy to everyone. That doesn't mean that you couldn't or won't make the team. It just means that you have to work a little harder at it.

I always suggest that girls practice together before tryouts. This seems to help in the "memorizing" of the movements. I also suggest that they video the routine so that they can take the video home and learn at their own pace....stopping and starting when they need to. I had one girl who would actually write the movements down to the beat.

i.e. 1 low touchdown with bent knees
2 stradle legs and clap hands
3 left arm in front, left leg in front and knock with right
4.cross arms to left shoulder and put right hand on hip
etc

This helped her to learn the steps by nothing more than repetition...both visually and physically.

If you are willing to take the time and devote your effort to this sport, then I would say that you should continue. You have nothing to loose and everything to gain....if you make it, great...if you don't, then you know what to expect next year.

Good luck!

You already answered your own question within your opening sentence - "I wasn't really into Cheerleading at first......."

Why let peer pressure dictate what you do, or don't do?

I recommend you find an activity you are interested doing, then work to improve on it.

Just keep trying until you are eliminated. Then you will feel good about yourself for not being a quitter.
