tele is the prefix denoting distance: that is why we have the telephone, the telegram, telescope, etc.

I have two answers for you. Tele is British for the word television and Tele also means distant, at a distance and or over a distance. Be confident I am an English major. Take care

it stands for action at a distance. examples include television ('at a distance' + 'seeing') .. telephone ('at a distance' + 'sound') ... and telepath ('at a distance'+ 'feel' or 'think')

in recent years it's also been used for words like 'telemarketing', 'televangelist' - etc - but personally I think such words are back-formed from telephone and television, not from tele- directly.
