Depends upon what is lost.
If it is something crucial, like keys or glasses, I just stop and think about where I last saw them. I do the usual lost spots. Eventually I find them. Often the glasses have been on my head.
Something of value like a bill or jewllery. I look in the usual places. Then I just do a thorough search. Really thorough. Shake out the bedding, everything. A few years ago I shook my hand and my wedding ring went flying. For a week I dismantled my room looking for my ring. It could not have disappeared into thin air.
Anyhow, the closets were empty, every pocket, every place possible, moved and shaken. No ring. Finally it was time to do the shoes that were covered by the clothing. The second last pair of shoes had my ring! I get shivers even now thinking of that. I never gave up or lost it. I knew it would come back to me.
That has happened with a few pins also. Sometimes things are just lost though. If I lost a lovely bracelet or something while camping in the wilderness, I consider it a gift to nature. Once doing a dawn ritual in the waters at Clayoquot I dropped a crystal and it smashed on the rocks. I cleaned it and buried it in a safer place as a gift. There are no accidents.
But what ticks me off is when by absolute carelessness i lose something that was valuable to me. I tend to call myself fifteen types of idiot then.

Two suggestions.
1 - carefully retrace your steps or think about all the places you've been since you noticed you lost something. Hopefully, whatever you lost will be at one of those places.
2 - if retracing your steps does not work, try looking for something else that you lost! ( haven't you noticed that when you are looking for something you lost you seem to find other things you lost before and couldn't find???? LOL )

I'm very absent-minded plus I have ADHD .
I find it best to not think about it and go do something else. I usually remember within the hour.Usually during sex, LOL.
I've been known to scream "Cabinet" and go running, my husband still "attached"
. It drives my husband NUTS !!!!!

Don't panic search!
STOP...take a few moments and let it all sink in and twirl around and bounce in the air about where you were last when you used it! VOILA! I remember!
