I am just embarking on playing ice hockey for the first time. I am planning on playing a position other than goalie and was wondering how much a full set of equipment would cost. It looks like I would need to get a helmet, shoulder pads, shin guards, elbow pads, girdle, gloves, pants, jersey, and stick at a minimum (I already own skates). Is it better for the money to start with used equipment or can I find a set of all new equipment for under 300 dollars?

Like anything else it all depends on the brands and/or line of equipment you get. I've seen sticks from $30 all the way up to $200 +, gloves from $25 up to $80 and this was when I was looking with my 6 yr. old who plays. If you want to get a rough idea, go to hockeymonkey.com or hockeygiant.com and you can see some prices. You can find used equipment on ebay and maybe some shops where you live (where I am we have a place called Play-It-Again Sports who re-sale equipment). We bought my son a slightly used pair of $200 skates (retail) for $30. You would probably want to go try some stuff on before you buy it over the net though to get your correct size. I think you may have a tough time getting everything new for under $300. Good luck and enjoy playing.

I play hockey, I coach hockey and I live hockey!!!

To realistically say that you can spend under $300 on used is pushing it. It all depends on where you live.

Skates - and these it is highly recomended that you buy new - will run you at least $150-200 for an average pair that will do the trick.

Next is the rest of the equipment - you only have $100-150, not possible even in the used market. Things you must buy knew are jocks -$40, underwear - $40-$100.

Now there is not much left.

SOLUTION: Try sending a mass email to every contact you know and tell them that you are interested in beginning hockey but are not sure about the gamble of putting so much money in and not liking the sport. People will come by your side and you will see that all kinds of equipment will pour in. Of course this depends on where you live. Here in Montreal...no problem, Dallas, Texas...maybe!

What position are you gonna play? My advise would be to join a beginner league first of all. Now if your going to play goalie, good luck, you've chosen the hardest position there is to play in ANY sport. It will take you quite awhile to learn and will require total dedication. Remember everyone starts out the same. Steve Yzerman fell on his *** 1000 times before he scored. Ok he was probably 4 years old but you get my point. Still interested? You can prob find a cheap set of used goalie equipment for around $500-$1000 price range. Maybe even cheaper. If your going to skate 'out' Id say you can prob spend $300-$400 or more to get started. Go to maybe a 'play it again sports' or even a rink and look on the bulletin board and look around in garage sales, talk to guys that already play. They may have some extra gear for sale or know someone that does. You mentioned you didn't want anything fancy. Well, hockey isn't cheap. I haven't even mentioned the prices for leagues or ice time or the hundreds of sticks you'll have to buy or skate sharpening....Once you learn the game and get better you'll enjoy it. If your not the 'stick to it' and 'follow it through', type of person I'd hesitate to spend the money

I would go through the close out section on:

http://www.epuck.com/

Look for some or all of your equipment there. You could try eBay for some of the equipment, but hockey gear gets pretty worked over so you may want to spend the extra money and get new gear. At least it will be your sweat soaking into the gear. By the time your ready for the NHL ( http://www.nhl.com ) you will have upgraded your equipment anyway.

For starting out, I recommend EBay. Your taste will change as you gain experience. Try some gear on in the stores to get an idea of sizing for the diffent brands though. Be sure to ask the seller if the sizing is for adults or kids! Ask lots of questions. Stuff from Canada is OK, just takes longer to receive, and shipping can be more. Some used gear may come with a few tears, that's OK, you'll tear it anyway. After outfitting my whole family, we averaged about $20 per piece of gear. That includes a couple of screw-ups and extras which we lone out. Get a cheap stick, girdle/jock, and over socks at GI Joes.

yeah u might want to buy some good used equipment, but i suggest buying new skates and having the baked to ur foot if ur playing ice, i dont think roller matters much. All new equipment costed me 1000 bucks. 300 bucks is not possible for all new or even good used. i think the guy before me is right u can probably get a set of used equipment for 400 bucks unless u get an awesome deal from some random person who wants to get rid of all their equipment fast. not to good of odds for that though....good luck, hockey is the best sport i have ever played. I love it!

Well if you want skates those can run from 100-300 dollars. mine were 200 and then sticks are like 10 dollars for a cheap one to 200 dollars or more for a nice one. shoulder pads- mine were like 100 or 80 but they can be like 30 for used
shin gaurds- 20-80 or 100 dollars. helmet- 30-80 dollars
elbow pads- 10-60 dollars
gloves-30-130 dollars depending on size
girdle-40-200 dollars
jerseys- 5 bucks at the most hahaa

good luck with that
these prices depend on size, and who makes them

I dont know what these other people are talking about because you can get all that equipment for less than 300 but you might need to get some cheap things. If that doesnt work then I suggest you should get some used eqiupment.

its impossible to get new gear for under 300$ even with used i'm not sure you are gonna have enough dough. every piece of equipment runs from 50$ to 300$ new.
