Nobody ever answers me... Well can someone at least tell me what I look for under the phone book for an internship in advertising art directors?

The advertising industry is very difficult to break into, unless you have connections.

Often those with an art background start at the bottom and work their way up the ladder, which can be difficult without someone to mentor you within the agency.

To go in as an Art Director might not be that easy. Try it, you never know what will happen. Use any contacts you may have.

As with corporate jobs, it's who you know, that can get you a foot-in-the door. If there are any organizations for those in your industry, join. It would be a good way to network your way into an agency.

An art degree is a study that is all background work--history and theory---I never went that route--I hung at sign shops--a labor intensive field that caters to the art of advertising--either existing work or creating new and vibrant ideas, a business without a sign is a sign of no business. I lettered trucks, trailers, buildings, walls, windows, did murals, show card, and graphics for print--it is a very visual business---I was my own art diector--met with clients and worked up the whole job according to the customer's wishes--that is a director--and if there is a staff you pass all the notes and ideas to them for the final color and sizing work up. Then you meet with the client for approval--it is a people oriented business---a grasp of the latest in techniques and trends in art and advertising---better get to work because you need to do all the small jobs before you can direct a whole staff.... there are time issues...money issues....agreement issues......concepts to get together......lots to know and think about. Meetings are crucial--and you can lose an account if you mess up....then you can lose the whole job you had. That's the job in a nutshell---I liked being my own boss and staff---I controlled everything. NEVER FAILED TO SATISFY A CUSTOMER IN 30 YEARS---and I was also doing this as a parttyime thing--on my days off from the firehouse. I made more in one day of art than I did for a month in the fire dept.
