I am 19 weeks pregnant and teach kindergarten....today one of my kids came to school and it wasn't until the end of the day that his mom called to tell me he was in the hospital yesterday and has shingles. i know from my blood work before we got pregnant that i am immune to chicken pox (never had them, never will) but are shingles different? called my doctor but he is on vacation and the attending nurse has not called back. wondering what to do...or at least would like a little peace of mind. thanks!

i think shingles are common in pregnant women. I know i got them some how. if you catch it early enough you wont have any problem just take the meds and the pain will go away rather quick. i know it might not ease your mind but just my experience.

You may very well be immuned to shingles if you are immuned to chicken pox- you are probably aware, shingles are just the adult version of Chicken Pox. I would just check things out with the attending, and just stay free from the boy, or call out if you can.

Shingles or Herpes Zoraster is the chicken pox virus. If you are immune you should npt get anything. But if you have immunity because you've had them before you could get shingles as the virus lives at the basr of the nerve and "blooms" outward during infection.

shingles is contagious. i used to work in the dining room of a retirement hom and a resident had them. she was kept in her room and anything that she had come in contact with had to be handled with gloves. in the elderly it can be fatal i believe or atleast very debilitating but for a pregnant women i can't say.

what you need to know is if he is still contagious. if so he should not be in the classroom at all for you and the childrens safety. i would notify the school nurse and have her check the child out tomorrow. if he still is contagious he can spread chicken pox to the children.

i know shingles spreads from the chicken pox virus so if you've taken the vaccine then i would assume you would be safe against shingles.

Shingles isn't contagious - its caused by the chickenpox virus. It usually occurs when your immune system is low, and as the chickenpox virus never really leaves you (it stays dorment in your system), it can occasionallly 'break out' as a blistery rash on one side of your back. Someone with shingles can't give you shingles - but if your not immune, they can give you chicken pox.

I'm sure your safe :)

Your immunity to chicken pox should cover you, but get that nurse back on the phone for more reassurance.
