chevy. 85 loosen nut at cable connection at the Transmission end, pull out plastic gear put a new one in.I did this because the speedometer was reading less than actual speed. The one that came in the P.U. had 23 teeth,I Replace it with one that had 21,It was a 15 Min Job, Part was like 6 dollars, the gear just pulls out.

Unscrew the cover bolt on the part where the cable goes into your transmission and then pull out the cable. You will see the plastic gear in there pull it out an replace.

Since you did not give the model or year, I'll guess just like everyone else. Most cars these days do not use a cable, just a speed sensor. Replace it and see what happens.

i own a shop, and this is an easy one, remove the tail shaft off the transmission, and then remove the gear, drain some of the fluid out of it ,before you start doing this or it will soak you in fluid, but its not a bad job to do on most cars or trucks, good luck i hope this helps.

Not saying this isn't the problem, but I would first inspect the cable itself, make sure it is properly seated on both ends.
