They "know" in the sense that you "know" that you're supposed to eat food. Animals act on instinct and I don't believe that they truely "know" anything, at least not in the sense that you "know" not to walk around naked.
You may name your kittens whatever you want. The only people who are going to be concerned with whether or not those are "girls" names, are people. Your kittens will be happy just to get attention from you. Those are beautiful names, by the way.

Stupid answer here: Do you know what sex you are???
Males are born, regardless of species, with hormones and a penis...eventually they're gonna get horny and want to mate: so they will know they're male.
Now, having said that... no animal cares about the name.... Somebody my husbands' brother knows named his dog
D O G (spell the letters out, don't say the word) and it responds. You can name an animal Shi^Head if you want and it will respond. It's why somebody who is constantly called stupid will respond or at least look if you yell "hey stupid"....
But don't you think it would be a little weird to say you have a male cat named Eloise?? That's like saying you have a female cat named Peter...it's gonna make people scratch their heads and wonder what you were thinking naming the cat that....

I'm almost certain that animals know what gender they are because of breeding reasons...it's in their instinct. Just like humans they know, to a certain degree, that they are a boy/girl and that one over theris a boy/girl...it just works out that way :) If you name a boy cat using a girl name, or vice versa, a human knows that's kinda weird ;) Good luck!

Animals do know what gender they are, but they won't mind if they are boys with girl names, so go ahead and name them that if you want.

I think they do know if they're boys or girls, but i don't thinks animals care much about the femininity or masculinity of their names.

I think that they do not know when they are first born. But when they get older and......you know..... I think the male will learn to know that he can some times over power a lady cat/dog. (not trying to be sexist, I'm referring to the "ALPHA MALE" thing in wolf packs)

I don't think they really know in the same way that we know; I think all that matters to them is that they find another animal who is the other kind from themselves :-)
