I did it in KY and hated it.It was 6 hours on and 6 off and if you fall overboard the chance of getting back on is almost zero.

Most companies will require a GED/High School Diploma to get hired. Keep in mind that you will need to sail as an ordinary seaman (OS) until you can qualify to take and pass the able seaman exam (AB). After this, you have to take the tankerman PIC course (while getting the loads and discharges signed off) in order to be allowed to work on deck as a tankerman. You can't just DO it. Reinauer Transportation in NY was paying tankermen $489 per day for a 21 day schedule. Bouchard also pays them well, and Kirby isn't too bad.

I nice having time off. It is like being retired. You can have all kind of hobbies. Or you can travel. It will ruin you for a 9-5 grind. What is nice about have 21 or 30 day cycle is that you when you home and 20 day rolls around you are board and ready to go back to work. Then when you are on the boat and the 20th day rolls around you are ready to go home. But what sucks is that important events in you life you miss because you are on the boat. Like holidays, birthdays, and family. I do not know about working on a boat in new york. You get a lot of people with the new york attude. I worked with a lot of assholes in my sea going career. But I have never seen as many assholes in one place as I did when I worked for a new york tug boat company. Every boat I got on was full of them.
I guess it would be different if you lived in new york and was used to it. It is better to work in the gulf of mexico.
