Telling someone you don't want to get involved is not the same as saying, "I don't give a rats *** so go away." So I think in most cases the person might take your politeness for granted and just go ahead and share their problems with you - because maybe once you hear their problems you'll give some great advice. Which may or may not be the case... that's up to you!

Yes they do. I feel it is because they may not have anyone else away from work that they socialize with. After seeing so many people get crazy at work and then killing themselves and others, I feel the least I can do is act like I am listening. If people walk around with all their thoughts on their mind and no release, it could be enough to drive one crazy.

I am the only female in the office. One of the guys is divorced, and he is always asking me for "girl" advice, or telling me about who he likes,or about what's wrong with this girl or that girl or how he wants to get laid...wait, that would be sexual harassment, wouldn't it? I usually just walk away, but maybe it's time to complain now. Besides, I have actual work to do!

No because they know I wont entertain it any longer. I just tell them I dont have anything to with it. If I choose to give my input, that is a different story. I would rather ppl not air out their problems at work, but you have many ppl who do.

Not if I don't let them. When someone starts to tell me something I don't want to know...I simply say "hey...I really don't want to know that. You have to find someone else to talk to about that."
End of story...
