there is no set time for them to last. they all vary with location. The higher the speed approaching the intersection, the longer the yellow.

Enough time for you to see it and come to a stop before it changes to red at the legal speed limit.

all that's in theory..several towns and light makers have been sued for short yellows causing tickets when people didnt deserve them.
