The Criminal Science Investigators (CSI) collect blood or hairs from the crime scenes and they take it to the lab and from the hair sample or blood smaple they can get the DNA of the suspect, then they go to the database on their computers where every criminal has his DNA checked and they see if there's a match with the data base....if there is then they have their criminal if not, they get suspects from interrogations and they they check their DNA and they get the criminal like that.

Watch the program: CSI or CSI MIAMI or CSI NEW YORK

Electrophoresis (sp?) is the test involved in DNA fingerprinting. It spreads out the DNA (I don't know how) so that you can see different horizontal lines. If the DNA from the crime scene and the DNA from the suspect line up the same, you have your match.
DNA can be taken from semen, blood, or any other traces left behind.

You DNA is a code that they can link to crimes because it does not change. It's uncanningly unique.
