What does corrupt police have to do with the existance of a middle class in Mexico and television shows. Wake up people and read the questions.
There is a middle class ... and there is lots of poverty. I'd suggest you study the history of Mexico if you really want to have an idea of what's going on. No easy answers for this one!

I hate it when they call Mexico a 3rd World Country, if you people read a little bit more about current affairs you would notice that Mexico is the 12th biggest economy in the world with a GDP higher than Russia, China, India, South Africa and many more locating its index of human development on number 51 of 177 countries as the government provides social security, water and electricity to the majority of the country, so STOP putting it as a junkyard, if you haven't got the chance to travel further than Disneyland, I would advise you to shut up.
I agree with many people here that there is a considerable middle class chunk of population in Mexico which is growing at a fast rate, nevertheless there is a long way to go to stop poverty.

i have to agree with the last 3 people that have posted a comment...police corruption has nothing to do with this question and before you answer anything know what you are going to say. There is a middle class in Mexico, its just not as big as the upper and lower class, or nothing like the one in the united states.
the whole issue with the poverty and tv shows is really hard, i think to really understand why that isnt happening you really need to study the last 100 years of Mexican history.

As many have said THERE IS a middle class in Mexico. I would add that the middle class is so huge, we support the whole Mexican system with our work and out Taxes.
We are the ones who get their taxes deducted from their pay checks (so we have no excuses to pay them), and we also get deducted our Pensions and Medical Insurance. In the case of medical insurance, many of us pay the government for services we never use, we actually go to private doctors, but our payments make possible for people with lower incomes to get their treatments and medicines.
We pay a ridiculous yearly tax on our vehicles, so roads can get paved. And we keep working, earning and spending, so our economic system has been able to survive deep crisis.
And yes, regardig "television shows about poverty", you only need to see the mexican tv news. Any channel, any night.

As my nickname suggests, i lived in mexico city for 19 years. There IS a large middle class that can very easily be seen in larger cities. The problem is that there is an even larger amount of poor people that are poor that make it seem as though there is no middle class. Poor people over there are not unhappy people by the way, they accept life as it is unlike many americans.
I think Ramblin' has the best answer, I'd choose his as best answer.

Hi Steven. I have been living in Mexico for 4 years now. I won't address the corruption issue as did previous posters because you asked nothing about that particular issue.
There is a growing middle class in Mexico. I lot of folks here have cell phones, and all their kidsall have one too.... as young as 10 year olds! DVDs, flat screens, new cars, SUVs, nice houses, the works. The banks are giving credit left and right and the peso is growing in value. These folks are trapped in credit debt just like the good ole USA, LOL.
Now, I'm not saying that the middle class is as large as in the states. The poor are trapped by their lack of education, and it'll take a couple more generations to fix much of that. But things are getting much better here. There are new initiatives aimed at just that.
No TV shows?.....Hmmm, maybe you didn't hear about Andres Manuel Lopez Obradoror, AMLO for short. He nearly won the election for president on a leftist socialist ticket. When he lost, he whined and moaned and yelled fraud. Truth is, there was no fraud, he just lost, that's all. But anyway, what he did was set up tents all along Reforma, the main street in Mexico City. He shipped in his supporters and they just sat there for about 4 months, effectively shutting down much of the business district. Anyway, the point is that it was allllllllll over the TV for months. The bruhaha has faded, but AMLO has become a sort of Mexican Jesse Jackson, standing up for the rights of the poor and disenfranchised. Some of the initiatives that he was championing have been initiated by Calderon, the new president. The times they are a changing my friend.

Alberto my guy, enable me say, you're sooo, flawed, i don't be conscious of what position in Mexico you r talking about. I lived and worked in Mexico for 6 years( certain i'm Mexican too), and that i in person-friendly words made 50 dls. a week, as did maximum different operating type people I knew on the time, and that i particular as hell ought to no longer have the funds for a gardener, maid, or chauffeur, be functional, if that were all actual i'd be in Mexico today with my associates and loved ones as should be maximum individuals Mexicans right here, i'm no longer right here because i opt to appreciate the respect of the U.S., i'm right here by way of many possibilities. And in simple terms so u different adult adult males be conscious of, certain I got here right here as a *******, even as i replaced into 6, and from the instantaneous i began operating I continuously paid my taxes, i purchased my personal residence and paid even more advantageous taxes, i'm criminal now and prepared to develop into an American citizen. do not hate, life is too short!

There is middle class everywhere. I go to mexico at least once a year. And i have done missionary work there. I've seen huge homes with nice cars, i've seen average people with average jobs. And i've seen people that have dirt floors.
I have 5 sister in laws and 3 brother in laws that are all middle class.

i agree with what everyone has said so far....but in the police defense...these people have rarely even attended college, they have little training, and they make very little money. it's almost understood that bribes and things of this nature are a perk to the job...they aren't trying to get rich off these bribes, they are trying to pay their rent. but that doens't make it right.
i think many rich people in mexico know they earned their money the wrong way, and they are scared to death to give education (ie power) to the lower classes, for fear they will come after them. at the same time, having an uneducated lower class can be very scary thing for a country. case in point, the recent elections. lopez obrador is a moron, yet he had the support of the lower class (b/c they just didn't know any better) and he nearly won. so...i think this division is coming around to bite rich people in the butt. yet i don't see things changing any time soon.
there are news shows about poverty, but it's mostly to promote catholic guilt and the giving of donations..which only provide temporary fixes such as clothing and food, and only serve to ease the mind of the rich people that donate, allowing them to go right on with their corrupt ways.
