I've been 1-2 cm dilated, 40-60% effaced, and baby at 0 station (depending on which dr. I've seen), for over a week now.
I've already been to the hospital w/ contractions coming 4 minutes apart regularly. I was told by the dr. I was in early labor, I was even given all the papers and birth cert. to start filling out for the baby, then I was sent home!
I thought that meant I was going into labor soon (I was 36 weeks then) but since then not only have I had contractions but I've had horrible back pains, and horrible period like cramps, and still I went to the dr. today and there has been NO change.
As absolutely frustrating as it is, I think it's completely normal. I've read everything I can get my hands on online and I've read about women saying they've been dilated to 2cm for a month, or dilated to 4cm for a week. AHHH! How awful is that?
My best advice is just to try to keep busy, go walking, take baths, etc. etc. I know it's hard cuz I'm in the same boat.
Good Luck to you!

Unfortunately, there is no way to know when real labor will start. With my first son, I went my 40 week check up I was 30% e-faced and 1 centimeter dialated. It didn't look like I was moving along hardly at all. They went ahead and sent me to the hospital 3 days later to be induced (complications with blood pressure and things). Then with my second son, I was 20% e-faced and 3 centimeters dialated when I went to the hospital at 37 1/2 weeks due to excessive bleeding. Thankfully, all was fine, but because of the complications with my first, they had me try to walk for an hour and see if things progressed. Nothing happened, and they ended up having to induce me again so that we wouldn't have to stress about complications. My mother had my sister about 4 weeks early and had no idea she was in labor when it happend. She went to the doctor, and he told her she was in labor, and she had her shortly thereafter. I have another friend who was in labor for a little over a day and hardly dialated at all. So you just never know. People change (dialate, and efface) at different rates and you'll just have to wait and see what happens. But usually when it's real labor, you'll know! :) Good luck with everything! :)

Effacement is the thinning, or shortening of the cervix and it ranges from zero to one hundred percent effaced. Fifty percent is a good sign that your cervix is softening to prepare for the passage of the baby, but the dilation is not very far. Many women can be 1 to 3 centimeters dilated for several weeks before the baby comes. The day before I delivered my daughter I was not dilated and not effaced whatsoever. (things can progress very quickly!) I would take the effacement and dilation as good signs that your body is preparing for birth but it doesn't necessarily mean that you are going to give birth any sooner. If this is not your first child, you will probably go into labor sooner than if you were having your first child. (about 8 to 10 days sooner, on average.) Good luck to you mommy!

It could mean that you'll deliver tomorrow or it could mean that you'll go another 6 weeks and have to be induced. I'm sorry that doesn't help you much, but that's just the reality of it - especially with your first. The good news is that some dilation and effacement make an induction more likely to succeed if it becomes necessary. Good luck!

My spouse became in an identical subject, the place she became a million cm dilated, and had a softened cervix. yet, she lasted a million greater week earlier hard artwork extremely kicked in. Like others have pronounced, each woman's physique is different - so practice now on your trip to the scientific institution! determine you have your bags packed, your acquaintances and family participants notified, etc and so on. the final information is, at 36 weeks, you're finished term. At this factor, the toddler gaining approximately an ounce. an afternoon - so in case you have had it with the puking, tiredness, having to consistently run to the bathing room each 2 seconds (if it incredibly is happening returned, you're certainly approximately to pass into hard artwork!), attempt going for a brisk walk. yet maximum heavily, get what sleep you could now - on account that is going to be priceless - fantastically in case you identify to breast feed. And finally, Congratulations on your new kit of delight! =)

I wish I could tell you that you were close. But, I walked around 3cm dialated for 3 weeks. Every woman is different and you could go into labor at any time.

The dilation alone doesn't mean much, but 50% effacement means you're going to be a mom pretty soon, as a rule.
Congrats!

you could go anytime! Congrats!!! ....but you might not. It is frustrating to not know, especially when you are ready to pop! You'll know when the time comes. Eat well, keep moving and ENJOY this last bit of time being pregnant
