I am looking to buy a late 70's early 80's Corvette but I am seeing ads for Corvettes as well as Corvette Stingray. What's the difference between the two? And which one of the two would be better?

The stingray name stopped after 1976. The true stingray was back in the 60s and it was named because of the split rear windows resembling a real stingray. The main difference in the 70s Corvettes is the bumpers. In 70 to 72, there were chrome bumpers which made them worth more. In 73, the front became fiberglass, where the rear was still chrome. In 74, it went to straight fiberglass. In 75, emissions started and smog pumps made them run worse and have less power. Late 70s when they dropped the Stingray name, there were more body updates. In the early 80s, they came up with the crossfire injection which was crap. In answer to your question, you are probably not going to want to pay extra to get a 70-72. Try a 73-74 or late 70s, skipping out on the first yr or so of emissions problems. GOOD LUCK!

1963 the Vette got a redesign called the Sting Ray.

A few years later for the next redesign they called it the Stingray and badged it as such.

After that the next redesign was the Mako.

It is just the name for the style for those years, no difference.

The vettes made through the 70's all said Stingray on them except for the '77 model. Those years (and before) are the best looking vette's in my opinion. I owned several of them throughout the years.
