slavery was already largely established by the time the united states was founded. the african slaves were brought over by the spanish to replace the previously enslaved natives who died out because of the deseases spread by the spanish. eventually france and england began bringing african slaves into their own colonies in the new world.

African slaves, or slaves in general. Once explorers (mostly the english) got to the new world and encountered the native people they overcame them with superior technology and enslaved them. This only happened in some places, mind you, not at every colony. Native Americans and the colonist got along quite well in many situations.

The African slave trade began in about 1770 when it was used to replace indentured servants. It allowed for cheap labor at the plantations. The Africans were usually captured by members of rival tribes and then traded to the European shippers and the slaves were then taken to the Carribean West Indies. They were always used for generally the same thing. Working on the cotton plantations in the Southern colonies. The North did not need slaves because their economy relied on industry and trade.
