I have a 65 and a 68 and have been doing all my own work for over 50 years. The different brands of gas don't mean squat. As to grade, start with regular. If the engine runs well, no pinging or knocking, then stick with that. If it is pinging during acceleration then try 89 and if it still does it go to 93. The 289 was designed for regular. Stepping up to a higher octane does nothing for you except lighten your pocket book. However if the engine has been overhauled and the compression ratio increased then regular may not be good enough. The only reason for higher octane is that it is required in engines with a high compression ratio. My 65 runs fine on regular but my 68 has a higher compression due to an overhaul and pings if I don't use high octane.

Since the mustang is classified as a muscle car the 93 octane would be best for your car. I had a '74 Camaro and '53 Belair and the engines in both cars ran real rough with loss of power on anything less than 93. It is the amount of octane in the actual gas that makes the difference. Overall the best gas for a muscle car is 93 octane.

I use marathon in my 67 chevelle and it runs fine, I use the 93 octane but it is a high performance engine, it all depends what engine you have in your mustang what octane you use, if you use 87 octane and the engine doesn't ping when accelerating that's all you need, if it does ping step up to 89 octane and see if it still pings.

If you want good stuff, get a name brand such as Bp / Amoco, Texaco, Shell. Being how it's carbureted, super unleaded premium 93 octane would sure not hurt.

Don't care much for cheap stuff myself, it's usually a dirtier fuel.
As a rough rule of thumb, the more expensive fuels being cleaner, your car runs better longer, and the higher the octane the cleaner the fuel (but not always).
