Have you noticed that the youth have begun an evolution of attitude since the home pc and internet have allowed them to travel at will? A growing lack of respect for the elderly and parental generation, as well as family values is a direct connection to getting educated via the web without seeking the advice at home. The push to further expand outward is now the inset need of new knowledge and acceptance. What's next, laptops in the womb and parental retirement at age 20?

The evolution of attitude and the increasing access to computers may indeed coincide, but are they really correlated?

I've noticed both but never put it together. I need time to think on that one, especially with the limited info here.

I'm not sure if the internet and computers have anything to do with growing lack of respect; that is something that starts with child-rearing from the parents. What I do see is a trend of laziness. Students don't have to go to the library anymore to research a paper or go to a teacher for help with homework. The PC is fostering a culture of sedentary behavior (along with game consoles and TVs in general), and educationally it doesn't teach children how to create a plan and follow through with it. As a side note, I remember when I wasn't allowed to use a calculator until I was a junior in high school. That was only because I was taking AP classes. These days kids can use calculators as soon as junior high (or sooner). Our education systems are dumbing down our kids. We should require students to gather their info and sources from real books and learn to do their own division.

I just want to add that studies show baby boomers are bent on being friends with their kids instead of being parents. That means discipline and teaching respect and responsibilities are out the window. They do this because they're trying to not be rulers of the iron hand like their own parents, but they end up swinging the pendulum too far. These parents in question need to get with it and realize they're spoiling their children. On the other hand, parents in their 20s are in fact more balanced in child-rearing, teaching respect, etc. and not giving their kids the moon when they scream every two seconds.

The Reason respect is lacking is beacuse the elderly now have less to teach, that children do not already know. counter-act this by bringing up things that interest that they don't know. The most popular choice being family history. Join the school board get all the parents on side and put an age level at which the students should do an assignment on family history they'll come begging to you. Once they've done the assignment it will nag at them and they'll want to know more in which case respect we'll be brought back and occasionally throw in things about other elderly people so they will have respect for all elderly people.

Unfortunately, we are now living in times when parents and teachers must be helping children with understanding the fact that they have to be responsible of whatever technology gadget they have in hand.
The second issue is that, as a society, we have had this tendency toward individualism and freedom; the problem is that it has been misunderstood, as every individual must find identity within a group and his freedom ends with his effects in society.
As a teacher, I have found that we have failed in giving children, teens and young adults a reason for trusting others. They have very soon understood that we all err and they have found ways in which they can get away with doing whatever they want, however they want. It is a tendency towards what is easier and quicker. Effort is no longer an option. Neither is respect nor the family, but the social group.
I have also found out that if we approach them and are willing to REALLY listen to them, they will begin to understand that our opinion, if not always what they want to hear, is valid. Little by little, they will realize that they can get opinions in many different places, but that not all of them are worthy.
Pray for them, listen, talk; there is still way to regain their confidence.

The change has a more to do with than just the computer, etc. It has to do with changing times. Teachers, police, etc. have less to do with helping or I should say with aiding parents with children. We no longer work together as a community to shape children, rather, parents have little outlets.

in certain people yes, but i think its hard to define an entire generation, didnt the similar things happen with the birth of Rock and Roll.

some of us 18 year olds still communicate with our parents...not all, that would be silly, but some... so again, not that your wrong, its just hard to generalize an entire generation.
