Why are some people, here in the USA and other countries, so bigoted against anyone who's not of their race, nationality, religion, creed, sexual orientation, or people who are physically or mentally challenged? What makes certain people think their race, religion, or nationality makes them better than everyone else?

People in general are afraid of things that are different then what they are used to. It's easier to call " sour grapes" or dislike what you dont know, rather than to take the time to learn about it.
When we learn new things, we might assimilate them into our way of life, and some people are too scared to accept that they can be any other way but theirs.
I dont think that looking at other ways of thought should be SO THAT one can change their waysd...but also it can be to reaffirm what choices you do make. If you never look at the other options out there then how can you really say that you are "chosing" what it is you are doing?
"Ignorance is bliss" they say... and so often that is what gets chosen.

Discarded or disrespect of what people do not know. Intolerance of ideas and life styles that is different. In a multicultural society people in power feel threatened by a take over of people or a culture they are not familiar with. People take dislike further to hate and then justify eliminating those who are threatening. They then feel better about themselves by assuring power.
This inherent hate for a whole group of people for no particular reason other than one's own bias is not something people are born with. Hate is a learned behavior. In an ever increasing multi-cultural society people are often faced with those who are different than themselves and diversity awareness is a vital component to a peaceful existence.
The American Psychological Association, in referring to hate crimes, remarked, "not only is it an attack on one's physical self, but it is also an attack on one's very identity." Hate crimes are any crimes where bias, prejudice, or bigotry are a motivating factor. In 2002, the FBI reported that there were 7,462 hate crimes committed nationwide. These crimes were motivated by:
49% Race
19% Religion
17% Sexual Orientation
14% Ethnicity
1% Disability
Yet, the most disturbing statistic is that half of all hate crimes in the national are committed by youth ages 15-24. Many times youth commit these crimes because they are ignorant or misinformed about the target group. Just as this behavior is learned, it can be unlearned through teaching tolerance and understanding diversity.

They probably have low self esteem and like to pick on others for their differences to make them selves feel better about themselves and to help them feel big and strong! People also just can't accpet the fact that although someone might look different, act different, talk different, and believe in something other than what you believe in but there still human. Another reason why people hate poeple different from them because they don't know anything about them and just make assumptions about them. Hope that helps! :)

Ignorance is the answer.I don't hate anyone.I may not agree with their life's choices.Everyone has freewill to live their life as they want.No one can make you believe in anything unless you open up to new ideas. As far as being better than you or anyone else I can't honestly say I am.

Ignorance, fear of the unknown, and lack of evolving themselves through education, with facts.
The second part of your question, is rhetorical, and judgemental on your part because you are now thinking that they are thinking they are better, which is not necessarily the case, it is okay to be proud of who you are and where you are from, because this is all you know.

I think they are not open minded, they have to travel and see other people that are different from them and that nothing is wrong with just because they have a different skin color.
