my external hard drive is detected when my computer feels like it, am i disconecting it wroung.
i just turn it off when im finished with it.

down in the right hand corner (running programs) there should be a green arrow indicating external hardware, right click it and hit safly remove hardware then shut it down..just leave it on, it takes more work to shout down and start back up

No don't just unplug it. Click on little icon that look like a arrow in gray matter near clock then stop connection then trun off and remove the drive.

Follow the instructions in the manual provided with your drive. Usually you just press "off".
