I am setting up a 5 Gallon fish tank and the girl at the pet store said that you had to wait 48 hours until you could put the fish into it. We arnt using tropical fish...and the instructions do not say that you need to wait this long. Anyone know how long it takes before you can put fish into the tank??

Once you've dechlorinated the water, you can add a few fish. With a 5 gallon, that would be two White Cloud Minnows. Later you can add 2 more. That's about all you can put in a 5 gallon. DO NOT put a goldfish in there!

like 24 hours should be good. You can also get what is called start right and put that in your tank. That will remove things you do not want in your tan. Make sure the temp is good and then let the bag float in the water before you put them in. Do not put the water from the bag into your tank. Get a net and take the fish out and place in water. you do not want to contaminate your water. Not saying the fish store water is contaminated.

You should try to wait for about 24 hours and make sure that the tank is heated to 78-80 degrees farenheight. you could also buy some biospira or BS not that but you put it into the tank and then you put the fish in after, but quik or the bacteria will die without the ammonia of the fish. Hope this helps!

what fish are you planning on keeping in it if not tropical? goldfish need 10gallons per fish when young and 20gallons per fish when adults. a few tropicals are really all that are suitable for that sized tank.

to answer your question though, you need to cylce the tank first, this is not running the tank for 2 days, see the site bellow for more info, or the site in the above answer I guess:

It really is best to wait 24 hours to let the chlorine completely dissipate, you need to add the water conditioner as well and then check the PH to be sure it's not to alkaline or to acidic for your fresh water fish, they are fragile to the chemicals in our drinking water unless it's well water and also the temperature. float the bag with the fish in it in the tank for 1/2 hour to get their temp. same as the water and avoid shock. Goldfish and Koi are hardy, though they too deserve gentle care. Good luck!

The tank hasn't been cycled yoet so try doing some fishless cycling. http://malawicichlids.com/mw01017.htm try going here and then buying the fish once the tank is ready. Hope this helps.

20-30 minutes should be fine...

after setting up the aquarium with water in it.... put the fishes in, still in the plastic bag, just let it float there for 20-30 minutes... that way the water in their plastic bag and the water inside your aquarium would come into an equilibrium temperature... so when you finally let your fishes out of the plastic and into the aquarium itself... the temperature of their surrounding wouldnt change that much...

i've had aquariums since i could remember... i love fishies!!! they're so relaxing to watch :D

have fun!
