Don't beat about the bush. Tell him at the earliest opportunity that you don't feel the two of you are compatible and you don't want further communication with him. It's bound to hurt him anyway but not so much as if you wait and find excuses to avoid him which will make him feel confused and upset because he doesn't know what's going on.If you see good qualities in him, tell him what they are and it will ease his hurt somewhat.
