The octane rating (91, 89, 87.....) has to do with certain chemicals they put into the gas. Usually with finely tuned engines require the higher octane # because lower octane fuel combusts before it is supposed to, a.k.a "KNOCKING". If you use the lower octane and try to accelerate hard. The engine will make a KNOCKING sound, if this happens to much you will burn up the engine and have to have it rebuilt. You might get away with going down one grade if you don't start off like your at a drag strip but it's just best to stick with what the manual says to use.

If you have a Land Rover with a V8 engine ( no, not the juice drink ) chances are it is a high compression engine therefore it will run better on a higher octane rating, say 91 or above. Usually if you treat the engine with a low octane rating, you will hear your valves tapping as a result of poor combustion. Hope this helps.

What year?

Just make a test. Next time the tank is on E, put 5 gallons of Plus (89 octane) in there and see how it runs.

Otherwise, being that it is a V8, it probably does need premium (91 octone), but you may be able to get away with plus.

It's necessary to read the owners manual and put in what it says. That noise you hear when the octane is too low is parts of your engine hitting other parts of your engine.

it all depends
if it does NOT have a distributer then yes you have to
if it DOES have a distributer then no you can just adjust the timing a little, you'll get a little less performance if you use lower grade but who takes a land rover off road anyway.
