How come there wasn't a black friend? Or even a Spanish friend? Or maybe an Asian friend? Or maybe even a multiracial friend? Did they all HAVE to be white?

I always wondered about that myself! After all,it's not like
there's a shortage of actors of all ethnic groups out there.
The show was supposed to take place in NYC,so you would
think there would be a little mixing there. A little racism while
casting,maybe?

There actually was a black friend. Actually she was a friend of Ross' She was his his work colege for a little while and then went off the show. Don't forget Ross and Pheobe are Jewish. and Joey is Italian

No they didn't have to be all white it just happened that they were the ones who got the parts and the shows creators never did anything in the show that was remotely racist and just because all the 6 friends were white doesn't make the creators of the show racist.

I have no close friends that are black, or gay. If they made a show about my life, I guess I'd be called politically incorrect, but that's the way my life is. It's not a conscious choice to be racist or homophobic...it's just the way my life unfolded. Does TV have to cave to all race/sex/orientation groups to make sure everyone is represented?

hmm never really thought of it that way and i dont think anyone else did either !its no wonder the show went on for 10 great seasons !!but i did find somethin unreal and totally strange ...how many ppl have all good looking friends living close to eachother in great apts. and do nothin all day but sit in a coffe house and talk bout guys and girls and stuff... ! great life for all of em dont u think ;)

i dont think that really matters....they did have other races on the show though...like when i think ross had an asian gf...and he also had a black gf. plus many shows are dominated by mostly white people anyway.

I don't know they didn't do that. You should talk to the producer or the creator. Ross and Joey liked an african american girl.

good question. we probablly were not there yet in society. interesting though that they did a lesbian , but not actually a friend.
