In my limited experience, it seems that all 'gay' roles are played by straights. In my view (as a gay man) it is not WHOLLY possible for a straight man to play a gay man - there are all the subtleties of facial expression, body language etc that a straight man just cannot LEARN. I have watched gay TV programmes and then discovered that the main actors are married with kids etc. Only country where I have found this to be different is France. But problem is, if you have UK or USA gay actors in gay films, they are invariably just that - gay films which quickly degenerate into porn. What happened to just tenderness and affection and propinquity? Why is it all just centred around the penis etc? The amount of gay porn for sale in London shops astounds me. What do gay men get from it all? I think it is incredibly 'fantasy' and loneliness and a lack of touch with reality, ie we have mates who are not perfect, not even particularly sexy, but who understand that relationships are .,..

I find it interesting that the previous answer post compares gays to murderers. That is quite extreme! I disagree with your statement about all gay characters being played by straight people, a simple look through imdb.com will reveal a number of decent examples. The thing that you should think about is how many gays are playing straight characters!! The acting community is very well known for its high gay contingent, and interestingly many gay men have to conceal their sexuality from an early age so are born actors and have no problem imitating the analogous straight characteristics to the gay ones you suggested..
Your comments about pornography seem a little misplaced as many 'gay' films centre on relationships, stories and all the similar content to 'straight centric' films. One change of late is that within 'straight centric' films, there are many many more gay storylines, with almost universal acceptance.
Blokes like porn in general because it turns them on. Relationships can be good as well as bad.

I think we all wish that some actors who performed roles of gay men were gay as well, but reality is different. There are so many gay actors who perform straight men that we have to accept that performing a gay character is not meant to gay men only. Moreover, many straight men are as sensitive and sensual as gay men.
I think that the real thing is the lack of roles of "ordinary" gay people in movies dealing with something else than homosexuality. I would really appreciate to watch a movie in which the main character is involved in any plot, and we would only see his boyfriend (or girlfriend) who has nothing to do with it. That would be nice and put an end to the traditional stereotype of pornography.
Let me give you some re known gay actors such as Rupert Everett, Montgomery Cliff, Rock Hudson etc...

Well, as actors they are being true to their profession. And what subtleties are you so concerned about? Some of them have been really good at portraying gay characters. If popular culture disgusts you so much, am sure there are plenty who would agree with you. Maybe you need to hang out with them more. What do straight men get from porn? Or what does anyone get from porn? By definition porn is many people's fantasy portrayed for them. It is hedonistic, and that's the purpose. So if anyone likes porn, should be you be that concerned? Be clear on what you like and what you don't, you shouldn't be really bother about others. To each his own.

I don't favor discrimination of any kind even well intended discrimination. If a role needs to be cast and the best actor available for the role is gay or straight then give that person the job. That person has earned the job. Saying only gay actors should play gay roles is discrimination.

I couldn't even be bothered to read the rest of your post - sorry. The point is they are actors - are you suggesting that every film or television show should only have people playing roles who are the same as the role? Then they wouldn't be actors would they! And wouldn't it just be the same as watchng a reality show?

cor babble much, i think there is some pretty good actors portraying gay people, but ti is acting, you wouldn't ask a murderer to starr in your film because he can get right into the charactor would ya
