Well, you could try scrubbing the carpet-my mom once suggested that for my room because it had a nasty smell after my birthday party and that worked. Or, try sprays or little cups of essential fragrances. I have cats and what gets rid of the smell in the living room are glade plugins usually, sometimes we light scented candles. Try a few and see what works! Good luck : )

First, open up the windows on a sunny day. Sometimes some fresh air and sunshine are all it takes to freshen up a room.
If that doesn't work, check around your room and see if the smell seems to be more concentrated in one area of the room than in the rest. Should that be the case, clean that area as thoroughly as possible and try to locate the source of the smell.
If you keep a laundry basket/hamper for your dirty clothes in your room or in an adjoining bathroom, take those out and wash them. And, if you keep shoes in your room, be sure to take a look at those, If you've got shoes that can be washed, throw them in the washer, and anything else, sprinkle a little baby powder inside them to freshen them up a bit.
If you have carpeting and either have or can rent a steam cleaner, I'd also steam clean the carpet. At the least, I'd grab some baking soda, sprinkle it on the carpet, let it sit for an hour and then vaccuum it up. The baking soda should absorb some of the smell, rather than just covering it up like an air freshener.
Next, I'd remove all the bedding and toss it in the wash. While the bed is stripped, just like the carpet, you can steam clean the mattress (if you've got the time necessary for the mattress to fully dry) or sprinkle some baking soda on it and vaccuum it up. At the very least, spray the mattress down with some Febreze just to freshen it up. If you can clean or freshen both sides of the mattress, even better!
If you've got curtains, take those down and wash them. Then, check your window sills for any signs of mold. If you find any mold, wipe the window sills down with a mixture of bleach and water.
If you have a bathroom that is attached to your bedroom, the smell could be caused by the steam and dampness from the shower. Get some fresh air in there, if your bathroom has a window. Check your bathroom for mold, including the windows and any cabinets that might be in there, and your shower curtain and liner. If your shower curtain or liner has mold, I'd suggest replacing them both. Wash any rugs, laundry or curtains that are in there.
If all that fails, you might want to consider having some kind of expert come in and take a look at the inside of the walls in that room. There have been some cases where people have not been able to get rid of odors inside their homes and it's been because there was mold inside the walls or, not to be gross here, an animal (like a mouse) has gotten inside the walls and died.
Once you're able to figure out what's going on and get your room smelling good again, you can keep it smelling fresh by doing the following:
01) Opening up your windows for a little while each day.
02) Spraying your carpet, curtains and bedding with Febreze.
03) Keeping a container of DampRid in your bedroom closet and in the bathroom, if you have one attached to your room. This will help reduce mold and mildew.
04) Place a box of baking soda in your closet to absorb odors.
05) Put a pretty, decorative bowl or container on your dresser and fill it with volcanic rocks to absorb odors (these can often be found in pet care departments/stores, cost about $5.00, and are reusable).

Great question! I've tried candles, but they are too dangerous for me, I've had some great renuzit (something liek that) air fresheners, but you could also try other air fresheners, some of those plugins ones, glade light show, or some kind of spray. Good luck!
***EDIT***
Sorry, I forgot to read your details. Try to find the souce of the smell. Is it stronger in an area? Check there. It could be mold or something. Clean your entire room. I have had some odd smells in my room before for absolutely no reason, but they'd go away in a week or two, and were easily covered with the renuzit air freshener. Sometimes my room smells liek poppy seeds, or spaghetti, which is weird, 'cause I don't eat either of those. I hope you can get rid of your smell!

Personally, I use Scented Oil candles. Air Freshener's and Carpet Fresh. All of which smell like my candles. So I'm not mixing multiple fragrance's. The combination of the three can be overwhelming, so I never use them at the same time. But constantly use one.

Try a plug in air freshener and see if you can find what is causing the odor you dislike in your room. It may be some sneakers you haven't worn for a while. It may be some dirty clothes or wet clothes that have mildewed and soured. It could even be a dead mouse or something behind your dresser or chest of drawers.

Depends on what the smell is. To get rid of the smell, you need to find the source of the odor. Do you vacuum your carpet often? Have your vacuumed your mattress? Do you have your dirty clothes hamper in your room? Do you have a bathroom attached to your room and do you keep that room clean? All these things can cause odors.

Get to the source of the smell. If it's mildew, it is likely in the curtains or carpet or your matress. Check these areas carefully. Air out what you can.
