Basically, my question speaks for itself. I really want to be in a theatre performing. I mean, I love the thrill of the dancers etc, and I sing when I'm by myself, but I'm too shy to audition.

Well, Everyone will have a different opinion about your voice but you should get an overall opinion. Do not trust a friend because they are not always honest... in concern for your feelings. Really, they only way to find out if America thinks your good enough, or even just your city (where ever you live) is to try out for play, if you make it... GREAT! If not, than get constructive criticism and take it and apply it... than try out for another play. What ever you do don't give up on your dream. Anything is possible. =-] Just remember that. Also, DON'T EVER try to be someone else. If you try to be like some famous person or even somebody you saw try put prior to your audition... DO NOT change your audition because you think your better. People HATE that. Here some tips on Drama tryouts... that I learned from a Drama Professor.

-If interrupted stop, wait for the interruption to end, and then continue.

-When you are done, DO NOT WALK OFF STAGE, never leave untill asked to leave, sometimes they will ask you to do something else.

-Sing/cold read until stopped... never stop yourself

-Dont show your nervous. Always walk with poise, judges like that. Dont ever apolgize, they HATE that.

That's all I got! =-] Hope I helped!

Most great singers WANT people to hear them - and many will say they're shy "in real life." Find a trusted teacher in the theater department and ask for his/her true opinion. Good luck!

Humm.... this is a hard one because I have known many people who think that they can sing but really can't. I don't think that you can ask you're friends because they might not be honest to save you're feelings. I would have to say that you should record you voice and then play it back. That way you can hear how you sound to other people, not to your own ears. good luck =)

At some point in your life, a professional, such as a singing teacher, will have told you that you are a good singer.

Do dogs howl? If they do, don't audition.
