Starboard=right side, Port=left side, Bow=front, Aft or stern= back or rear

The Front would be the Bow, the Head or For... if referring to something located there. The Stem is the actual front portion of the hull. For the landlubber, it's the 'pointy end'.

The rear would be the Stern or Aft if referring to equipment, the transom is the actual rear portion of the boat and the Taffrail is the upper part of the rear portion, normally above the deck.

The sides are called the beam and reference to something along the side is referred to as abeam. As the object passed you it would be 'abaft-the-beam'. The sides can be referred to as 'windward' where the wind is coming from, and Leeward on the downwind or 'lee' side. Free-board is the height of the hull out of the water.

Looking toward the bow the right side is the Starboard side as in the old galley's the 'Steering board was on the right side. You had to give way to the vessel on the right because his view of you was often blocked by his sail.

Opposite of the Starboard side is the 'Port' side because otherwise you would risk damaging the 'Steering Board' against the 'steps' or jetty. The red light is on the port side as Port wine is red.

A lot of terms and expressions have come from nautical terms. It's a tremendous source of trivia.

if you are standing on a boat and you are facing toward the front of the boat then the left side is the port side which is the red light side, the right side is the starboard side which is the green light side, the back of the boat is known as the stern or the aft, the front of the boat is a bow or the foward, now the term forward and aft and more commom on larger vessels like for example" WE ARE TAKING ON WATER IN THE FOWARD COMPARTMENT" or " THE TOOLS ARE IN THE PORT AFT TOOL SHOP" but the more common are stern and bow, i hope this helps
