Leaving your computer on doesn't negatively affect anything except your power bill.

And sense when do computers "need rest"? They're not pack mules, they're electronic calculators. Machines without souls. Robots, if you hook them up to a mechanical arm. The components are designed to last for years whether you leave them on or turn them off every day.

I would shut it down when not in use for the following reasons.

1.) If you have an alway ON internet connection why give hackers 24/7 access to your PC?
2.) Your PC has mechanical FAN which have a finite operating life. Your wearing out the fans bearings
3.) You expose your PC to the effects of power surges and uncontrolled shutdowns if you have power failures and donot have a regulated & filtered UPS (Uninterruptable Power Supply)
4.) The PC fans will draw in dust which will collect in the PC. Running 24/7 means that you will be collecting even more dust and quicker than if you run it when needed. Dust effects heat transfer as it blocks cooling fins. Dust sticks to fans blades causing slower fan speeds and noisy operation. Dust is also capable of causing memory error as it hold an electrical charge and can alos become conductive as it absorbs moisture.
5.) Its a waste of electricity . Typical PC power supply is rated at 450 to 500 Watts . Do you leave your TV running 24/7? Do you leave lights on in three or four rooms 24/7?

The greatest danger of leaving a computer on 24/7 is for overheating. If you have been running it at great lengths already and it is not hot then continual running should present no harm unless one or more inside fans stop.

There is nothing to gain for leaving a computer on while the risk of leaving it on un-attended is tremendous. Some computers have even caught fire and started house fires.

The monitor itself could add another five or ten dollars a month to the electric bill...why bother...?

Computers can tolerate being left on in less than a week, but beyond that they will overheat. The powersupply will overheat and might cause a short circuit, and the small fan that cools down the motherboard could fry any parts. This could eventually lead to a household fire. But if you see computers being left on for more than week or so, it's because they were designed to tolerate such conditions and they have back up computers that relieves the other. For an ordinary computer, they are designed for personal use, business, and education, and can only tolerate being left on in less than a week under certain circumstances. But beyond a week, expect your computer to show problems such as power surge, reboot, automatic shut down, etc.

There are different opinions on this. Some say that it is better to leave it on because the stress of having to boot things up will shorten the life of your devices. Others say that leaving it on puts more stress.

Personally I dont think it really makes a difference. I tend to just leave my stuff on constantly. (My laptop I put into hybernate when off). I really havent had any problems doing it this way.

Your computer's performance shouldnt really have any problems with staying on. Now if its on too long and memory just gets too full (programs with memory leaks or viruses and such). Then you will see better performance restarting.

Basically I never restart/turn off until Windows forces me too. And as long as you use power saving options like sleep mode (or better yet hibernate), then you wont be pulling too much more power.

And the old argument continues...

I did a lot of desktop IT work during my career and my experience is that if you DON'T turn it off, it becomes a dust filter and the cooling fans wear out! When the dust builds up, heat isn't disapated and you begin having problem with it locking up or rebooting. I say, give 'em a rest at the end of you daily use.

Hope that helps

the best thing to do is put it to sleep.Contrary to some of the answers you have gotten, the worst thing you can do is turn it off and on.The cpu works harder loading bios and start up programs then it does in normal use.as far as fans if you are not computing anything then your fans run very little.even though you can't see you cpu working when you are computing electrical signals are going through the cpu causing heat,,Well if your not computing no heat no fan running all is well and no hard start up on your pc...good luck

leaving it on for weeks is a waste of power
a processors life expectancy is about 10 years switch on time so you're reducing that
a hard drive is a mechanical device and it's life expectancy is only a fraction of the processors so leaving it on reduces it's life expectancy for no reason expect a failure about every 12 to 18 months
memory & mother board life is similar to the processors

leaving it on causes wear and tear on the fans and excess dust buildup that can kill your pc you should turn it off at night when your sleeping also you should unplug it at least once a month get a can of air pull off the side cover and blow it out paying special attention to all fans
