do you have to go through sacramento? I personally would never go that way, kind of out of the way. Best bet is to take 80 west to fairfield, then 12 east to lodi to I - 5 south to stockton then CA -120 east towards sonora to 99 south to modesto.
going through sacramento is ten miles longer and usually has more traffic on it. and you are kind of going out of the way a bit and will probably take an extra 45 minutes.
