I'm about to finish college. However, I've come to the realization that I hate my major and don't want to pursue it. This scares me because I don't know what I'm going to do when I've graduated. Is there anyone else who felt or is feeling this way? Did you discover a career that you loved? If so, how long did it take and how did you discover it?

I felt that way when I graduated first, and so did many of my friends, but after a year of just working part-time and thinking about my life I rediscovered why I loved the subject in the first place and decided to do a Masters in it! You can always do a postgrad course in something generally related if that's of interest to you. If you're in your early 20s still I'd say don't worry too much. Take some space. There's no panic in starting a career and you shouldn't rush into anything until you've got some headspace. College can be very intense and disconnected from the real world. Good luck!

Believe it or not it's *very* common for people to decide they hate their major. Very few people go on in life to use their specific major in their job. How many psychology majors do you know? Are they all going to become psychologists?

Think of your degree as an opportunity to get generally educated. Also, even though you hate your major, it's a valuable experience. It means you can persevere and achieve even when you don't like something. That's very valuable in the working world.

The harder part is figuring out what you *do* want to do when you get out. Your school probably has career counselling services. I suggest you take full advantage of them. They'll have tests to help you figure out your interests and aptitudes. They can also give you good tips on how to find a job after graduation. Also, it's all free now, which it won't be once you graduate. Go now and check it out.
